The Stewiacke & District Volunteer Fire Department was officially formed in 1944 (known as the Stewiacke Fire Brigade). However, much earlier than this efforts were underway to protect the town from fires. Information suggests that the first efforts for fire protection were in 1906 when the mayor and council designated "fire wardens". They were responsible for getting volunteers and help when and if needed.
Unfortunately due to COVID concerns, the department was unable to properly celebrate their 75th Anniversary. A group of dedicated volunteers compiled a document containing 25 pages of history of the department and circulated in it in the town newsletter. We thank this group for getting this information and showing our far the department was come in 75 years!
